A Mint Julep for Summer

Mint Julep Recipe

This week I have been taking a bit of a food based trip back in time. I love old fashioned recipes, they are often overlooked as new food and drink fads take over. In my haste to discover new drinks, I have missed out on making a Mint Julep, and now I’ve tasted it, I have some lost time to make up.

This really is a classic recipe, originating in the 18th century and was once associated with being used to settle the stomach. I am all for drinking for medicinal purposes, but this Mint Julep doesn’t taste like medicine to me. It’s bourbon based and that’s really all there is to it apart from some icing sugar, water and mint. It’s strong, yes, but in a good way and the mint really makes it tastes like summer. This cocktail calls for crushed ice, which is easy to make in your NutriBullet or blender. I did try bashing some up in a bag but it just made a huge watery mess. In true Lucy Loves style, I didn’t read the recipe properly when I made this but it didn’t seem to matter, my Julep still tasted amazing.

Yes, this cocktail has a set of balls, but I’ve had a bit of a week of it, so balls are what’s called for. This bourbon based tipple is my vintage Friday Cocktail of choice, and I suggest you give it a try too.

This Woodford Reserve really is the daddy of bourbons, it really makes this Mint Julep something special.  And so few ingredients too, this is my kind of recipe.

Make a start on this with a tumbler or a silver julep cup if you have one *I didn’t*. Take the mint leaves and muddle them with the icing sugar and water. Now, here’s the thing, I didn’t do this as I didn’t read the recipe properly, so the photos are a little deceptive, but don’t dwell on it.

Next, pack your glass with crushed ice then pour on the super generous shot of bourbon.

Ignore the fact my ice has icing sugar on it please, nothing to see here.

Give the drink a light mix then garnish with a mint tip. Sip and wish summer could last forever.

This Mint Julep is short but sweet, not unlike myself. It’s just right for a summer Friday, sitting in the garden with your friends. Or skulking indoors hiding from your moody teenage sons, it’s really up to you.

Have a restful weekend.
